Success at Shrewsbury for Royals

Shrewsbury Regatta is usually a happy medal hunting ground for Royal Chester Rowing Club and the 2017 event on Saturday and Sunday was no exception.
Two trailers loaded with boats made the trip over the weekend to race on the Severn in Shrewsbury. In the Women’s Junior 15 single sculls Fenella Cowdell won easily begining a busy days racing.
Next a composite crew of Royals and Grosvenor Junior 17 Girls raced in the Senior Women’s Novice Eights event over 1000m. Competing in two heats they beat their opponents easily to take the medals.
The girls in the eight are from various Chester Schools and are training to compete at Women’s Henley Regatta later in June.
The Royals Masters Men - Greg Lawlor, Simon Quarmby, Geoff Wellings, Jack McGarva, John Boothman, Peter English, Mike Stephens, John Hinnigan and cox Anna McGarva entered three events and won them all after some exciting and demanding races. In the eights race the semi final was won by a canvas (one meter) against a very strong Nottingham crew. The final saw a clash of local Chester crews with Royals racing a strong Grosvenor crew and beating them easily.
The eight the split into two fours to compete in different age categories once more racing the Nottingham crews and winning both events giving Royals five wins on the day.
Sunday racing brought more wins with the Junior 13 girls winning in double sculls with Neve Artell and Eliza Harris and coxed quads with Neve Artell, Eliza Harris, Kitty Harrison, Mica Bird and Freya Doyle coxing.
